How much life insurance do you need?

An interactive tool shows the logic: account for income years, debts, education needs, and what you've already put aside.

Start by adding up what your income supports, then subtract what you already have in savings or coverage. You don't need an exact number—coverage is sold in chunks, and the aim is to pick a figure that keeps your family stable during the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

A simple formula: (your income × number of years) + debts + education costs − existing savings or coverage, rounded to $5,000. This is a ballpark figure to explore, not personal financial guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Most planners suggest covering 10 to 20 years of income, though the right length depends on how long your dependents would rely on you. Families in Santa Maria with young children typically pick the longer end, since costs for childcare, housing, and education all cluster together.

Debts. For most Santa Maria families, a mortgage is the biggest financial obligation. Having enough insurance to pay it off means survivors can stay in the home if they want to, rather than being forced to sell.

Education. Set aside a rough estimate for each child's college or training, in current-day dollars. It's simpler to factor it in now than to buy additional coverage later.

What you have. Include savings available for emergencies, and any group insurance through your employer. Keep in mind that group coverage typically stops if you leave the job, so many people only count a portion of it.

Once you've settled on an amount, our quote tool will show the cost across 10- to 30-year terms from every carrier. Many people choose coverage slightly above their estimate because the added cost per month is minimal when you're younger.
